If you think of a celebrity who is loved by many and continue to seek ways to inspire and make a tangible impact on the world, that definitely would be Montel Williams. For more than 17 years the television host who is also a former Naval Officer, Marine, inspirational speaker, bestseller author, actor, entrepreneur and advocate for patients worldwide has touched the hearts of so many and has inspired his viewers with his uplifting messages.

Currently, Montel Williams hosts a show on Lifetime titled "Military Makeover with Montel" dedicated to renovating the homes of military families. This NAACP Image Award winner has published 9 books. His latest is The Sailing of the Intrepid that was published this year. He has also partnered with Brothers Grimm Seeds to Release the “Montel’s Dream Widow” strain.

I had the opportunity to speak to the Emmy Award winning television personality about his partnership and upcoming strain with Brothers Grimm Seeds.

Here is what he has to share to the Consciousness Magazine readers.

Tocarra Eldridge-Robinson: You recently partnered with Brothers Grimm Seeds to release Montel’s Dream Widow, which is a strain that has medical benefits. Would you like to share more information about this?

Montel Williams: We had a conversation and I was like I'd love to put up a strain because I just feel like the industry has really looked past the strains I like. What I'm putting out, we're calling it Dream Widow because it is a combination of Blue Dream and White Widow. Both of those are, I believe, are old school cultivars that have some very interesting terpene formulations -interesting with their level of THC. I don't go for the big banger anymore. I don't really need to get a strain that's 29, 30% THC. That's not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for something that provides me with comfort, some ways that I can still function and I'm not couch locked. I can be creative and it eases pain.

Tocarra: Absolutely.

Montel Williams: I think there are a lot of people, especially baby boomers - I like to applaud us baby boomers. Baby boomers, at this time in life, we don't need to really be couch locked, you know what I mean?

Aaron Robinson: Yes, I do. Now, we’re going to touch on the benefits. So, the Montel’s Dream Widow was named after you, your legacy, your vision, your history, and seasoned connoisseur. Now, how has this strain been beneficial for you?

Montel Williams: Right at this minute we are still waiting for the seeds to be crossed and grown out fully so I can finally sample a product.

But I’ve had each one of them individually. And how does it help me? It definitely helps with easing the pain. One of the things that people like to turn to, or turn to cannabis for, is because somebody says, ‘it'll ease your pain.’ You have to really understand what easing my pain means… cannabis isn't like Tylenol or opioids, where it basically blocks the pain receptor. Cannabis more is a distraction. The pain may still be there, but I feel so good that I don't have to concentrate on that. That's not what I focus on. I focus on the fact that I feel better than I feel pain. There are some people who say, “I take some cannabis, especially if it's higher THC. It deadens my pain.” No, it really doesn't; it deadens your brain to the point that you're not processing the pain the same way, but the pain is still there. That's what I feel. For me, one - it lifts me up. At the same time, since I'm up, I don't concentrate on the pain. I get to go to the gym and work out. The pain is there, but it's not something that's on the top of my mind.

Aaron:
Yeah. That's understandable. Regarding the Montel’s Dream Widow strain, you and Brothers Grimm Seeds are donating a dollar for every pack sold in the first 30 days up on the release to the HeroGrown Foundation who donates medical cannabis and CBD to retired veterans and first responders that has been injured, prescribed deadly drugs and so forth. Would you like to talk about this?

Montel Williams: A lot of people may know, or some people may not know that I have been focused on veteran issues since I left the military. I work with veterans right now. I'm working on an initiative that is a known cure for PTSD that I've been trying to propagate and promote around the country and around the world. I've been also working on initiatives to help veterans who have traumatic and mild to moderate traumatic brain injuries. The veterans are very important to me and have always been very important to me. I did 22 years in the military, I host a show right now that's called Military Makeover where we, as a team, build a veteran's home from the ground up. It's the best show that's on Lifetime and it's very rewarding because our veterans need all the help we can get. More and more of us need to focus in on the fact that we know veterans have spoken out over and over again. Cannabis helps them. So I want to give them something that I think will not make them unable to function, but will help them relieve their pain.

Tocarra: Absolutely. Now, the strain is dropping on November 30th. What does that accomplishment really feel like and what does it mean to you?

Montel Williams: Oh my goodness! I am so excited because one of the things that are so important about it is that, first off, seeds, people don't understand expensive cannabis seeds are legal. They're legal in every state in America. Why? Because the seed itself, though it has precursors for cannabinoids, it doesn't have cannabinoids in it. So there's no THC, there's no CBD, there's no CBN, there's no CB or anything in a seed. It takes the plant to grow to full maturity for its constituent parts to really break out, cannabinoids being formed and of the terpenes, the flavonoids and those things being formed. I'm so excited that these seeds will be made available worldwide. And, especially in the new burgeoning home grow market, which is probably going to be equated to about 10 billion in sales in the next two to three years. I'm glad that they're going to be made available for the home grower out there who's the new enthusiast and is trying to produce their own medication.

Aaron: Absolutely, absolutely. And, I'm going to veer right from the topic for one second, because I always try to make sure I get a question in from significant individuals to share encouragement to the readers. But I have to say this before I ask this question. My mother, when she was alive, she was a big fan of yours. When we watched The Montel Williams Show, she didn't have to get us to come in to watch. We went in ourselves because that's how much we loved you and your show on Television. So I wanted to let you know that from the heart.

Montel Williams: Thank you!

Aaron: For those individuals who are looking to be successful like you and whom may face health issues or are going through unpredictable things in their life, what inspirational words would you share with them in hopes to keep them encouraged?

Montel Williams: There's a little phrase that I have that I live by. “I alone own the definition of who I am.” I'll say it again. “I alone own the definition of who I am.” Yes. I may be a person with MS, but MS isn't who Montel Williams is. Yes, I may be a person who just had a stroke. The stroke isn't who I am. I am who I am by making sure that I garner the information that I need to make decisions about my future, and decisions about things I'm working on. I try my best to be as knowledgeable as I can possibly be on any topic that it is that I'm trying to pursue. I make sure that I stay true to who is Montel Williams. That's the one thing that no one can take away from me. You can try to take my job, you can try to take my career, you can try to take everything else, but that's not going to stop me from being me. That's not going to stop me from speaking to you. That's not going to stop me from sharing my dreams with everyone. So, own the definition of who you are and get all the information you need to live up to your expectations, not down to someone else's.

Tocarra: Great words-of-encouragement! We're going to switch gears and talk about your personality, which is amazing, and your character. You have been loved by not only myself, my husband, but by so many when it comes to your television appearances for you having an amazing personality and character. Is that something that you have always had naturally before television, or was it something that you had to work on and get used to?

Montel Williams: One of the things I learned very early on in life, is I'm the only person who can define who I am. When I learned that, I tried to stay true to that. So I appreciate the accolades. But I’m just a person living up to their own expectations, not down to someone else's. I did that as a child. I was the president of my class in my junior year or senior year. I was a student on the Board of Education in my senior year of high school, I was involved in student politics, I went to the Naval Academy, I commissioned as a naval officer after having enlisted in the Marine Corps, I served as a special duty intelligence officer in the Navy for about 14 years and 15 years active in the Navy, adding up to my 22-year total time invested in the service. I did so always by striving to learn as much as I possibly could about everything that I was involved in. Having this interview, I don't open my mouth unless I take the time to ensure that I have the information right there at the tip of the tongue that I need to have for an interview. There's no other way to do life. You have to step into life prepared; you have to step into life ready to go. You have to do this for your whole life. I say to a lot of people, and some people get a little upset when I say it this way, but I'm 69 years old. At my age, I'm in the last quarter of my life. There's no question. That's just how it is. I'm in the last quarter. I can still score a touchdown in the last second.

Tocarra:
Yeah, that's true.

Aaron: That’s true. And Mr. Williams, in conclusion, would you like to talk about anything else that we haven't discussed that you would like to add?

Montel Williams: I will tell you that I know that you guys are going to be interviewing Ice-T and to please tell him that I had nothing but respect for him his entire career.

Aaron: Okay, most definitely we will.

Montel Williams: And I'm looking forward to the fact that he is also a team Brothers Grimm. And I think he's been very open with the fact that he doesn't even use cannabis…has never used cannabis. However, he understands how important cannabis is to the lives of others.

That's a person who truly understands their place in life, who understands that the world is not just about you. It's about what you can do for your fellow man.

Aaron: Absolutely. Absolutely.
