Danette Mahabeer-Turner: Showcasing Survival, Resilience, and Hope

Interviewed and written by Aaron Robinson – Editor [@Iamcomprehend]

There are those individuals who have endured challenges in life who fought the odds to overcome barriers that now shine their light on many and there are those individuals who may not have a way out and are afraid or uncomfortable situations, however, long for a voice.

Danette Mahabeer-Turner, a Domestic Violence survivor-advocate has not only showcased that she has overcome unfortunate situations - however, beat the odds, has a voice, and is making a change in many peoples lives as an inspiration and beacon of light.

In the fashion world, Danette has elevated her presence as an official runway model. She is an entrepreneur, certified life, business, and career coach, international motivational speaker, ordained minister, television host and the bestselling author of Leave Alive: Goodbye Domestic Violence.

I had the opportunity to interview this amazing woman. Here is what she has to share with the Consciousness Magazine readers.

Aaron Robinson: Congratulations! You are currently representing your heritage as Mrs. Universal Petite Jamaica 2026 at the Universal Petite Pageant? What kind of accomplishment is this for you?

Danette Mahabeer-Turner: Thank you so much! Representing Jamaica as Mrs. Universal Petite is truly an honor and a blessing. For me, it’s not just about wearing a crown — it’s about representing my heritage, my culture, and the resilience of my journey. This accomplishment is a reminder that no matter where you come from or what challenges you face, you can rise and stand boldly in who you are. It’s a milestone that celebrates both my personal growth and my commitment to empowering others to embrace their own strength.

Aaron:
You were recently at the New York Fashion Week as an official runway model. What inspired your modeling journey?

Danette: Modeling started as a dream I never thought would be possible. I was inspired to step into it because I wanted to show women — especially those who have been through trauma — that confidence and beauty are not defined by the past, but by the courage to walk forward. Being part of New York Fashion Week was surreal, and it reminded me that when you take bold steps, doors open that you never imagined. My modeling journey is less about the runway and more about the message: walk proudly in your purpose.

Aaron: I think it's beautiful how you tied modeling and your mission to raise awareness about domestic violence. I know they are separate missions, but what was the influence to sort of work them together?

Danette: Thank you for noticing that. For me, modeling became a platform — literally and figuratively — to bring awareness to an issue that is very close to my heart. When I step on a runway, I am not just showcasing fashion and pageantry, I am showcasing survival, resilience, and hope. The influence to merge the two came from realizing that visibility matters. If people see me shining in spaces like fashion and pageantry, while openly sharing my story, it breaks stereotypes and gives others the permission to believe that they too can heal, rebuild, and thrive.

Aaron: When we last spoke, you released your book Leave Alive: Goodbye Domestic Violence which became a bestseller. Would you like to share any updates on this amazing and inspiring book, because I know it empowered and changed so many peoples lives?

Danette: Yes, I’m so grateful for the impact this book has had! Since its release, I’ve received countless messages from survivors, family members, and even advocates who say the book gave them the courage to leave, to heal, or to start conversations they were afraid to have. One update I’m excited about is that I’ve been invited to speak in more communities and organizations, using the book as both a resource and a tool of empowerment. The ripple effect of Leave Alive continues to remind me that our pain can truly become our power and purpose.

Aaron: I recently watched some episodes of both of your shows Voiced Thoughts Talk Show and Podcast and Voices of Victory that air on iHeart Radio, Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and Paducah 2 Television. You discuss some serious topics that are very resourceful and also help to inform the community. What inspired these shows?

Danette: Both shows were birthed from a desire to give people a voice. I’ve always believed that storytelling is one of the most powerful tools for change. Voiced Thoughts focuses on society-based conversations that affect our daily lives, while Voices of Victory highlights stories of resilience while raising awareness on Domestic Violence. What inspired me was seeing a gap — too often, real issues are either overlooked or silenced. I wanted to create platforms that are educational, resourceful, and healing, while also connecting the community in meaningful ways.

Aaron:
You overcame some harsh challenges in your life and were once a victim of domestic violence. What would you share with an individual looking for a way out or a better life?

Danette: First, I would say: you are not alone, and you deserve to live, not just survive. Leaving is never easy, but staying is far more dangerous. My encouragement would be to reach out for help — whether that’s a friend, a family member, or an organization. Don’t let shame keep you silent. Your life has value, your voice has power, and your future has purpose. The moment you decide to take that step, everything begins to change, and freedom is possible.

Aaron: Danette, before we conclude the interview, would you like to add anything?

Danette: I’d simply like to thank Consciousness Magazine for always amplifying voices and stories that matter. To the readers, I want to leave this thought: no matter what your past looks like, it does not define your future. Keep walking in courage, keep believing in yourself, and remember that your story has the power to change lives — starting with your own.
