Melvin Crispell III GRAMMY Nominated Gospel Singer Songwriter and Producer

Consciousness Magazine had the opportunity to interview chart-topping, GRAMMY-nominated gospel singer, songwriter and producer Melvin Crispell III. Melvin recently released his third project, an EP titled Covered Vol. 1. He covers tracks such as Tye Tribbett's "Hold On,” CeCe Winans "He's Never Failed Me Yet," "Yesterday" by Mary Mary, just to name a few.

During 2019, Melvin’s won the BET "Sunday Best." He continues to leave his presence not only throughout the music industry, however, changing and touching the lives of many souls around the world with his musical talent and mission.

Here is what Melvin Crispell III has to share with the readers:

Aaron Robinson: You have an upcoming EP titled Covered Volume 1. What inspired this EP?

Melvin Crispell III: The inspiration behind this EP came from me simply wanting to pay tribute to some amazing artists who have made a huge impact in cultivating my artistry today.

Aaron: Who are some of your inspirations when it comes to music?

Melvin: I could name so many, but some of my biggest inspirations are Tye Tribbett, Kim Burrell, Mali Music, Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary, and even Michael Bublé and Harry Connick Jr. The list goes on!

Aaron: When did you experience that moment of knowing that you were going to be a successful artist?

Melvin: If I'm being honest, I can’t really say what defines success. I just want to change lives and spark hope in the kingdom. 

Aaron: You have been nominated for 4 Stellar Awards and also a Grammy nomination for your sophomore album, No Failure. What type of gratification is that for you?

Melvin: It’s an absolute honor to be recognized for the work I’ve put in, especially when there were countless times I felt unqualified or not good enough to do it. But my true focus is building the kingdom and living a life that’s pleasing to God.

Aaron: You have an album titled Covered Volume 1 that is filled with modernized covers of Gospel classics. Was it a challenge to cover other artist hit songs in regards to feeling like you had to outshine their work? What is that process like for you?

Melvin: I will say it was definitely a challenge creating this EP. The goal was never to outshine their work but to recreate iconic moments with just a touch of Melvin. Another challenge with this EP was meeting all the vocal requirements for each song. All of the songs have a different feel, requiring different techniques from moment to moment. That’s honestly something I’ve been practicing since I was a teenager.

Aaron: Do you have any encouraging words for aspiring artist?

Melvin: To aspiring artists, trust in the gifts that God has given you. Practice every single day until the wheels fall off…when they do, put them back on and keep going! Be kind, remain humble, and make sure your focus is the cross. Find your sound, find what makes you happy, and do not compromise!

Aaron: Do you have any inspiring words for those who feel like giving up and may not see any outlet in life?

Melvin: For those who feel hopeless, know you’re never alone. I’ve been in some of the darkest spaces and thought I would never see light again. But with patience and just a small amount of faith, I’ve watched God make me new. The process didn’t happen overnight, but I’m here, a miracle! There were even some days when I saw myself sinking into that space again. But I had to remember how God pulled me out over and over again. He will show up!

Aaron: Would you like to add anything in conclusion or mention anything that we haven’t talked about?

Melvin: Lastly, I want to thank every supporter out there. Thank you for loving me as we take this journey together! It’s an honor to serve all of God's children, and I’m looking forward to the many years of Kingdom work that are to come. God bless.
