Ed Lover Executive Producer Director and Actor of Come Back Kings

Ed Lover, Executive Producer, Director and Actor of Come Back Kings
Interviewed and written by Aaron Robinson- Editor

Over the last 30 years, Ed Lover, legendary rapper, actor, musician, comedian, radio personality, and former MTV VJ has been instrumental, nonetheless, influential when it comes to shaping Hip Hop. Ed Lover is the host of "The Ed Lover Show" on SiriusXM's Old School on the BackSpin station. He is currently the executive producer, director and actor on the new reality show comedy Come Back Kings which stars Anthony “Treach” Criss, Dupre “Doitall” Kelly, Mr. Cheeks, Black Rob, Jermaine Hopkins, “Talent” Harris, June Balloon, “Super Producer,” Jameio, and Nashawn Kearse. On Friday, July 31st 2015, the 30 minute reality show aired nationally on the AMG-TV network.

I had the honor to interview Ed Lover, the phenomenal pioneer. Here is what the legend had to share about the new reality show Come Back Kings and his latest happenings.

Aaron Robinson: Hey Ed, how are you?
Ed Lover: I’m doing well.

Aaron: You are an actor, executive producer and director of the new reality show Come Back Kings. What captivated you to want to partake in the reality show Come Back Kings?
Ed Lover: What got me is the initial idea of Come Back Kings, it’s not what you are going to see on a screen. The initial idea for me is to help guys that had hits in the late 90’s and late 80’s to reinvent themselves. That’s what we were set out to do, and document that. As we moved along and started working together, we realized that we were having a lot of fun together and that we were laughing together. Rashad El-Amin, who is also an executive producer of the show, we sat down one day over a cigar and I said to him, “Let’s make this a funny show.” Comedy is what’s missing in reality shows. Some of them show the lowest points of African Americans. Oh, let’s call ourselves out of our name, let all of us throw drinks in our faces, let all us fight, fight, fight, fight, fight! From day one, that’s something that we were not going to do at all. I was like, “You know, these guys are hilarious!” I was like, “We might as well make this funny.” We needed to find a niche that would definitely get people watching. That was comedy; so I ran with it.

Aaron: As a rapper, radio personality, comedian and actor, were their any new experiences that you embarked upon on this journey as oppose to your past endeavors?
Ed Lover: Yeah man! Everything on this show I learned from, especially putting this director hat on. Being a director is really tough man. Every day you learn something…how to do this and how to do this with this, you know. With something technically new, you learn that there is always something brand new that you learn every single day. I’m all about new experiences and expanding my horizon as an entertainer.

Aaron: Would you say that the role of being a director was challenging while you were working on the show?
Ed Lover: The lighting, getting the show right… I think the hardest part as a director was making everybody be quiet while trying to do the shot man. (Laugh) When you’re dealing with hip hop artist, these guys are talking; they are having a good time. It’s like, “Dude, we are working over here, ya’ll gotta be quiet”. (Laugh) I think that’s the hardest part. Daniel J. Carpenter is also directing with me; he’s more technical than I am. He’s always helping me set the shot up right, making sure the lighting is right, and what filters to put on the light.

Aaron: How did you like working with the cast and crew?
Ed Lover: You know man, I’ve known these guys forever; it’s a pleasure. It’s just so much fun; we have too much fun on the set. Working with these guys…it’s the best!

Aaron: Besides the reality show, can we expect any other upcoming projects from you in the future? Ed Lover: My concentration right now is the Come Back Kings. And for me, that’s number one. Right now I do have something on the technology side that I’ve been working on for the last three years.

Aaron: That’s a good deal right there. Before we end the interview is there anything in closing that you would like to add that we haven’t spoke about?
Ed Lover: Watch the Come Back Kings, you are going to enjoy it and you’re going to laugh! We’re putting it all out there on the table. We’re all just having a good time. If I had to decide, I would say that we are the ghetto version of the Real Husbands or Housewives. (Laugh) And that’s who we are man. Just laugh and enjoy yourself.
